Statement

These paintings have to do with surveying and mapping, even realms that are yet to come. All of my work is painted by hand, without using stencils or tape to find the edges. I think this is an important aspect these paintings, because it is at this point, at this edge, where mark making and expression can be seen. It is at this line where content and expression are articulated. Color is also an important aspect of this relationship. This is seen most successfully in my earlier work. Here I was experimenting with the color theory of Joseph Albers and Hans Hoffman to push the idea of painting as a flat surface on a two dimensional plane. Basically, I see my work as soft and painterly, although camouflaged as minimalist hard-edged.
